Passionate about martial arts since childhood, along with the chivalrous spirit of a martial arts student, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen has spent extra time opening free martial arts classes for disadvantaged children in Dong Hoi City.

Every afternoon after work, passing by the SOS Children’s Village in Dong Hoi City (Quang Binh province), one can clearly hear the clear, unison shouts echoing from the village grounds. It is a Vovinam martial arts class taught free of charge by a martial arts master to children living in the village. The master who opened the class is Mr. Vo Van Tuyen (40 years old, Bac Ly Ward), an officer working at the Propaganda Department of Quang Binh Provincial Party Committee.

“I started learning martial arts in 8th grade and started teaching when into high school. Later, when I have a more stable job, I still try to arrange my time to continue to maintain my passion, both to exercise, to entertain after stressful working hours, and to guide and help people,” Mr. Tuyen said.

Previously, besides his main job at the Propaganda Department, Mr. Tuyen also opened martial arts classes after hours to increase his income, but when he was suggested a free class for disadvantaged children, he immediately agreed.

“In November 2022, I opened a free class for students at Quang Binh Ethnic Boarding High School. Here, the students are all children from remote areas, ethnic minorities, in difficult circumstances and want to learn martial arts,” Mr. Tuyen shared.

According to Mr. Tuyen, learning Vovinam martial arts not only helps improve health and protect oneself, but also helps learners learn spiritual lessons, maintain the ideal of helping life, helping people, and always living for others when given the opportunity.

In early 2023, Mr. Tuyen connected with the SOS Children’s Village in Dong Hoi City. Here, when he heard about the unfortunate stories of children in the village, Mr. Tuyen was very touched and wanted to do something so that the children would not be disadvantaged compared to their peers. Therefore, when he received an offer to open a free Vovinam class right in the village, Mr. Tuyen immediately accepted.

Vovinam classes at SOS Village Dong Hoi City started in February 2023. Although it has only been around for a short time, this is the activity that attracts the most children to participate in, along with other group activities in the village.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ninh, Director of SOS Children’s Village Dong Hoi City, hopes that the class will be maintained regularly to create a playground for children. “When we received the connection with martial arts master Tuyen, we were very happy to have someone to teach the children in the village for free. Hy vọng với tinh thần và sự tận tụy của võ sư Tuyên, các em sẽ phát triển tốt, trở thành những học sinh giỏi và sau này trở thành những con người luôn biết giúp đỡ người khác”, anh Ninh chia sẻ.
